Supporting a breeding program that has a specific focus and goal that aligns with your values should be a priority. After all, if no one cares where to get their next companion from, it simply encourages the irresponsible sources to offer the most supply, variety and compete on price, disregarding everything else that is truly vital – health, breed specific traits, temperament. Don’t be discouraged to wait for the right puppy from an ethical breeder and pay for the purposefully bred dog of good health – it will save you money in the long run.
Key things to look for:
▪️Purpose – What is their focus? Why did they start breeding dogs and what is their goal for the program?
▪️Screen adult dogs per OFA guidelines and/or DNA test, besides the vet checks.
▪️Involved in dog sports – do they do anything with their dogs to prove sound physical and mental health?
▪️Avoid misleading labels – teacup, deer head, apple head, baby face, etc.
▪️Easy to communicate – you may be in touch with this person throughout your pet’s life. Enjoy the relationship. Some want daily pics and others good with occasional. Find the breeder that you share similar approach and values with.
▪️Meet them at a dog event – not everyone wants to invite strangers to their home, respect that, but meeting elsewhere is a great option to see their dogs.

Please, don’t expect to find a puppy here and now, be prepared to wait 1-2 years. If you find a breeder who has a pup now that’s awesome, but it may not always be the case. Make sure you support the right breeder, the one who is passionate by what they do and will be there for you and your dog.
