Chihuahuas puppies require special attention to ensure they develop into healthy and happy dogs. Here are 6 essential tips we share with our Applegarden puppy owners:
Prevent High Jumps.
Chihuahuas are prone to injuries if they jump from high places. Avoid letting your pup jump off furniture or other elevated surfaces until they are at least 1 year old. This precaution allows their bones to develop properly.
Avoid Slippery Surfaces.
Chihuahua pups can easily slip and fall on smooth surfaces, leading to injuries. Ensure your home has non-slip rugs or mats, especially in areas where your pups frequently walks.
Always Have Water and Food on Hand.
Small dogs can dehydrate quickly – always carry water and food with you during outings and ensure they eat on schedule. This ensures your pup stays hydrated and well-fed. It will also avoid Hypoglycaemia, especially during long walks or trips.
Limit Walk Duration.
For puppies under 6 months, limit walks to no more than 20 minutes. For puppies over 6 months, walks are not to exceed 40 minutes. For adults, it varies – some may be able to walk for over 1 hour, while others may require a break every 40 minutes. If your dog gets tired, consider using a dog bag for a 15-minute rest while you continue walking. For senior dogs, consult your vet for personalized guidance.
Avoid Dog Daycares and Dog Parks.
Do not take your chihuahua to dog daycare or parks for vigorous play with active dogs until they are at least 1 year old. Puppies’ bones need time to fuse properly before engaging in high-energy activities.
Be Cautious in Hot Weather
Avoid walks in temperatures exceeding 30 C* (90 F*) for more than 10 minutes. Always bring water, especially for dogs with a history of dehydration or those that do not drink much at once. Dog have fewer sweat glands than humans, so they can overheat quickly, which can lead to serious health issues.
