Checklist: Chihuahua Grooming Supplies

I have a separate tack box for all my dog grooming supplies most of which are for show prep. However, there are some basic grooming tools every Chihuahua owner should have.

Chihuahuas are a “minimal grooming breed”; therefore, there are not much to groom other than maintaining a sanitary trim. It includes trimming nails, feet hair, and hair around private areas. In this post I included basic tools and products I believe necessary to have in chihuahua home.

 1. Slicker brush – prevents hair from matting on fringes, pants, tail and brushes out the undercoat during shedding seasons.

Recommendations:

2. Pin and bristle brush – massages the dog and promotes good hair growth.

Recommendations:

3. Scissors and/or thinning shears  – for trimming private areas and cleaning the feet.

Recommendations:

4. Nail trim or Nail dremel – nails should be moderately short. Weekly trim is suggested.

Recommendations:

5. Toothbrush and tooth paste – at least weekly brushing required, more often is better.

Recommendations:

6. Shampoo – try to use only quality ones.

Recommendations:

7. Conditioner – used after shampoo to maintain good hair quality. You can also mix it with water and spray on hair while pin brushing (helps to prevent static and hair damage).

Recommendations:

8. Vaseline – if your dog doesn’t like dog boots, then apply Vaseline to protect pads in winter from salt and in summer from dryness.

Recommendations:

9. Lavender essential oil helps to calm down an excited or anxious dog. Applied to the pads.

Recommendations:

10. Colloidal silver – helps to prevent tear stains by killing bacteria that develops in moisture. Works for under the eyes in Chihuahuas, as well as between wrinkles in bulldogs, for example. Spray directly on the affected area or apply onto a cotton disc and wash.

Recommendations:

11. Ear Cleaner – Thanks to the structure of the chihuahua ear (up and open) the ventilation does all the work and there is normally no need in ear cleaning products. If your dog experiences regular discomfort in the ears, consult with a vet.

Recommendations:

If you have your favorite products you would like to share, message me via social media or email.
